Ok … we have heard a lot about the desperate need for Judicial Reform in South Carolina (HERE) … and the fact that South Carolina is one of only two states where our Legislature (124 House Members & 46 Senators = 170 lawmakers) elects our judges.

And the legislators electing those judges include LAWYER LEGISLATORS … the same lawyer legislators that appear before these judges they elected.

Legislator Conflicts Of Interest:  So if you needed a lawyer … who would you hire?  The smartest lawyer on the street … or the lawyer legislator that ELECTED the judge you will appear in front of?  And if you were a lawyer legislator … wouldn’t your lawyer billable rate INCREASE substantially if you could tell clients you know the judge personally and helped put them on the bench?  Yes … they are PROFITTING … SUBSTANTIALLY!!!

Judicial Merit Selection Commission (JMSC):  So how does this whole process work?  How do legislators maintain tight control on the process?  It all runs through and is managed by legislators via the JMSC.  The JMSC has 10 members … 6 members of which are legislators … so who do you think controls the process?  Yes, it is simple math.

And wouldn’t a simple improvement be to bar “Lawyer Legislators” from being members of the JMSC?  Put non-lawyers on the JMSC.  That would be easy right?  Well … they don’t want to do even that.   

HOMEWORK

Below is the “Main Page” (HERE) of the SC Judicial Merit Selection Commission (JMSC).  This is where you can find a treasure trove of information about how the process works, how to file complaints, general information … and the 2024 Judicial Elections information (which is heating up at the SC State House right now).

So today you have a Homework Assignment!  Read up on the JMSC.  We have to know how it works if we want to fix it … or at least if we want to know how the “game” is played (to the disadvantage of citizens).

 There will be a test … so be prepared 😉  #Joke!!!

Your years of showing up, whether through grassroots organizing, advocating, educating others, or amplifying contentious voices are laying the foundation for change and the change itself! Just think of those that used to be involved and are not today. Your ability to keep going, sets you apart!

Consistency builds integrity … turns values into impact. Sadly we watch fellow patriots “turn” … change their stances, go against those that they should be supporting based on their convictions.

Why people change? Constantly navigating conflicting views or defending unpopular stances can easily lead to burnout. As we all know, politics can also reward compromise with tangible benefits.

It’s about recognizing these pressures and choosing to prioritize principle over ease, even when it’s hard. Those who steadfastly uphold justice and compassion, refusing to bend under pressure, are the real winners. When do you set boundaries? While you try to correct the bad behavior with clarity and grace, pay attention to patterns. Is the person’s behavior consistently disruptive or disrespectful? Are they unwilling to listen or change? Are they not willing to discuss? Time to set or escalate boundaries. Disengage from the person to protect your peace and the community’s well-being. Forgive but don’t enable.

“As for a person who stirs up division, after warning them once and then twice, have nothing more to do with them, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; they are self-condemned.”
