Knowing the “players” in SCGOP politics is key … and with a lot of new participants in the Republican Party organization statewide, it is important to know “who” the players were on the stage at the 2023 SCGOP State Convention on Saturday May 20th.
We have already introduced you to Rep. Brandon Newton (R – Lancaster & Kershaw) who functioned as the Convention President, ramrodding the convention through in favor of the “establishment” and to the dismay and horror of many newcomers.
But another one of the parties on the stage was attorney Karl Smith Bowers Jr., aka Butch Bowers, Esq.
Bowers, as many will remember, is the attorney who was paid $60,000 by convicted killer Alex Murdaugh to use his “connections” to get Murdaugh’s surviving son, Buster Murdaugh, readmitted to the University of South Carolina School of Law. (HERE and HERE.) Buster was kicked out at the end of his second semester in 2019 after being accused of plagiarism, according to a September 2021 report in The Wall Street Journal.
The South Carolina is a good-ol’-boy system at it’s finest.
Trump Impeachment Lawyer: Butch Bowers is also the attorney that Senator Lindsey Graham reportedly recommended President TRUMP hire for the second impeachment trial (HERE – January 21, 2021) … and who TRUMP parted ways with, a few days later (HERE – January 30, 2021).
The parting was allegedly due to a failure to disclose Bowers’ close relationship with former S.C. governor Nikki Haley. Considering they are now both vying for the 2024 Republican Presidential Nominee slot, parting ways was probably a smart move on President TRUMP’s part.
2022 SCGOP Election Protests Hearings: Bowers was also the attorney the SCGOP brought in for the summer of 2022 Republican Primary election protest hearings before the SCGOP State Executive Committee.
Bowers specifically opined that the appeal hearing in the Joe Dill v. Joey Russo Greenville County Council primary race was timely. A plain language reading of the law clearly demonstrated that the SCGOP had missed the deadline, but when challenged during the protest hearing by then Greenville County Republican Party Chairman Jeff Davis, Mr. Bowers simply stated that attorneys can have differing opinions.
Russo won his appeal even though the the hearing was held untimely under SC State Law. Unfortunately no appeal was lodged by Mr. Dill with the SC Supreme Court as to the timeliness of the hearing, so we don’t have a legal ruling on the dispute.
Linked to Hit Pieces on SC Freedom Caucus Members?: Mr. Bowers has a long history of SCGOP “establishment” service, but most recently, Mr. Bowers was linked by FITSNEWS to hit piece mailers against a SC Freedom Caucus member.
There have been a lot of hit piece mailers and texts over the past few months … but ask yourself “who” would be behind it? The SCGOP leadership perhaps? Monied special interest? Some have even opined that the hit pieces are by Freedom Caucus allies to garner sympathy? A longshot for sure, but you never know … it is politics, and politics is all about the mental and information manipulation of constituents and voters. Trust no one!!!
FITSNEWS, May 25, 2023: “The lawyer behind this mudslinging? It is none other than Columbia, S.C.-based shyster Butch Bowers – who as I noted recently has a “reputation for dirty pool” and a history of repping politicos who find themselves under ethical clouds. …” [CONTINUE READING]

The mailer in question came out just a few days after the SCGOP State Convention, specifically against Rep. Josiah Magnuson (R – Spartanburg), and was “Paid for by South Carolinians for Common Sense”.
And “who” exactly is “South Carolinians for Common Sense”? We don’t know yet … and may never know … but we do know it is a newly formed (March 17th, 2023) South Carolina non-profit and the Registered Agent is none other than attorney Butch Bowers.
Yes, he may just be doing the legal work … and maybe he had no idea what “South Carolinians for Common Sense” were planning on doing … but seriously, do we really think he had no idea?
Again, it is the South Carolina good-ol’-boy system.

Remember, nothing is as it seems in SC politics … or politics in general … but it is important to know the players and the backstories if you do not want to be manipulated into supporting the “wrong” person.
It is also important to know that these people are “paid” to do a job. They may be nice people, but they are not your friends … and they are not here necessarily to promote the conservative cause … or even the Republican Platform. Many say that is especially true if they work for the current SCGOP leadership.
As we teach, “Watch what they DO, not what they SAY.”
Butch Bowers, Esq. is a political player … you should know who he is.
